Bob & Machelle Beilke - Zambia (Church of Central Africa)

Bob and Machelle Beilke serve the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). They train and build capacity in teachers and lay counselors from roughly 35 CCAP schools serving 4,500-5,000 children from the poorest communities in Zambia. Their work is guided by the vision and mission of Zambians who set the agenda and utilize their expertise so that the CCAP may become self-sufficient in developing their teachers and caring for the spiritual and mental health concerns of the children entrusted to them.

Machelle builds teacher capacity through teaching, modeling, and coaching in the area of instructional strategies including student engagement and continuous student assessment. She also facilitates the process of teachers conducting demonstration lessons and provides pedagogical content knowledge in literacy and mathematics. Teachers are then taught to reflect upon their lessons individually and as a community of learners in order to improve learning for their students. She plans to extend her ministry by bringing US educators to work directly with teachers in schools observing, providing feedback, and modeling effective instructional practices. Bob wrote a training manual in basic counseling skills and a biblically-based resilience curriculum, which is now utilized by lay counselors and teachers in many of the schools. He has trained trainers so that others within the CCAP can sustain this endeavor. He plans to increase community engagement and involve US counselors and lay counselors in treating traumatic grief and psychological trauma so that the CCAP can treat the children in their congregations and schools.
