Raising Kids Who Actually Live Their Faith

Raising Kids Who Actually Live Their Faith

By Rachel White, Pastor of Next Steps

Growing up, I had a front-row seat to what real, everyday faith looks like.

My grandparents modeled a heart for mission and a deep love for God’s Word. My dad and I would sing worship songs together before bed. My mom made space for honest conversations about how faith carries us through hard seasons.

Faith wasn’t just something we believed—it was something we lived.

That foundation has stayed with me. And now, as a parent, it’s something I hope to pass on to my own kids.

Because the truth is simple: faith is meant to be practiced at home—not just at church.

Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles—even neighbors—all have a role to play in helping kids grow in their faith. But if you’re anything like me, you know there’s a gap between wanting to disciple your kids and knowing how to actually do it.

We’ve tried all kinds of family devotionals over the years. And if I’m being honest, we haven’t done any of them perfectly. Some seasons are more consistent than others. Some attempts feel meaningful; others fall flat.

But we keep coming back to this: it matters too much to give up.

That’s exactly why we’ve created a new resource to come alongside you and your family during our upcoming series, Finding Your Way.

This summer, our entire church—from elementary kids to adults—will be walking through the Ten Commandments together. And we’ve designed a simple, flexible weekly devotional to help you carry that into your home.

Each week includes a real-life story, a memory verse, a Bible passage, discussion questions, and a hands-on activity. It’s not meant to be complicated or overwhelming—it’s meant to be realistic for everyday life.

And here’s what makes it even more meaningful: your kids will be learning the same passages in kids ministry that you’re hearing in the main service. That means your conversations at home can be more connected, more natural, and more impactful.

As we walk through the Ten Commandments together, it’s important to remember what they really are—and what they aren’t.

They’re not just a list of rules or a checklist to measure ourselves against.

They’re an invitation into a different way of living.

A way rooted in love for God and love for others.

God gave these commands not to restrict his people, but to guide them—to show what a life aligned with him actually looks like. They reveal his character—his goodness, his justice, his desire for relationship—and they begin to shape ours.

And maybe most importantly, they remind us that we can’t do this on our own.

The commandments have a way of exposing what’s going on beneath the surface—our priorities, our struggles, even the things we put ahead of God without realizing it. But instead of leading us to guilt, they’re meant to lead us back to grace.

That’s why this series matters so much for our families.

Because these aren’t just ancient words—they speak directly into our everyday lives. Into how we treat one another, how we handle conflict, what we value, and how we make decisions.

And as we explore them together—both at church and at home—we have an opportunity to help our kids see something deeper:

Following God isn’t about rules for rules’ sake.

It’s about learning to trust him, to love him, and to walk in the kind of life he created us for.

Maybe the goal isn’t raising kids who simply know the commandments—

but raising families who are learning, day by day, to live them out together.
