Lay Counselor
TEAM PURPOSE:
The Lay Counseling team exists to provide compassionate, biblically grounded presence for individuals seeking emotional, spiritual, or relational support within and without the church. Lay counselors provide short-term, Christ-centered, research-based tools and guidance while referring individuals to professional counselors when appropriate.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Complete 8-month training course.
- Provide one-on-one, confidential, safe, trained counseling.
- Commit to bi-weekly supervision of counselees.
- Participate in ongoing training and development.
- Maintain healthy boundaries and clear communication.
SPIRITUAL & PRACTICAL QUALIFICATIONS
A mature, growing relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to the authority of Scripture.
A participant/member at Chapel Hill or a like-minded church
Demonstrated gifts in listening, encouragement, and discernment.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, clear ethical boundaries, and a non-judgmental posture.
Willingness to be trained in lay counseling principles (e.g., biblical counseling, trauma awareness, active listening).
TIME COMMITMENT
8-month training; bi-weekly supervision (1.5 hours); personal choice for how many counselees to see at once (1.5-hour commitment per week)
