INFANT BAPTISM

WELCOMING YOUR CHILD INTO COVENANT COMMUNITY

At Chapel Hill, we believe baptism is one of the two sacraments Jesus gave his Church. It is a visible sign of God’s covenant grace, celebrating his promises and marking believers—and the children of believers—as part of the covenant community of faith. Baptism does not save us; rather, it points to God’s saving work through Jesus Christ and calls us to respond in faith throughout our lives.

WHY DO WE BAPTIZE INFANTS?

As a church in the Reformed tradition, we understand baptism to be the New Testament sign of God’s covenant, much as circumcision was in the Old Testament. Throughout Scripture, God works through families and invites children into his covenant people. Parents present their children for baptism as an expression of faith in God’s promises and a commitment to raise them to know and follow Jesus.

A PROMISE BEFORE GOD

When parents present a child for baptism, they make public promises to:

  • Raise their child in a Christ-centered home.
  • Pray with and for their child.
  • Teach the Scriptures and the Christian faith.
  • Participate faithfully in the life of the church.
  • Model a life of following Jesus.

As a congregation, we also promise to encourage, pray for, and help disciple each child as they grow in faith.

WHO CAN HAVE THEIR CHILD BAPTIZED?

Because baptism is a covenant sign given within the community of faith, we ask that at least one parent be a committed Chapel Hill participant who has entered into membership with the church before scheduling an infant baptism. If you are newer to Chapel Hill and would like to learn more about membership, we’d love to help you take that next step.

HOW TO SCHEDULE AN INFANT BAPTISM

Getting started is simple:

  1. At least one parent should be a committed Chapel Hill participant who has entered into church membership.
  2. Complete the Baptism Request Form.
  3. Our staff will contact you to schedule your child’s baptism during a worship service.

We’ll help you prepare for the day and reserve seating for your family and guests.
