People come to Chapel Hill from a wide variety of experiences and faith walks. It can be a challenge figuring out what it means to be a disciple of Jesus in this community. Where do you start?
Membership can sometimes have a negative connotation. If you're cynical, you'll see it as just a way to pad the church rolls, or worse, pad the church coffers. But at Chapel Hill, we see membership as a public commitment to be a follower of Jesus in this community. Nothing more, nothing less.
First Step is a process designed to get you started on that journey. If you’re wanting to grow as a disciple of Jesus at Chapel Hill, this can be your “first step” into the community of Jesus followers here. What does this process look like?
A three hour class immediately after the worship service on Sunday (12pm-3pm) that walks you through the identity of Chapel Hill as a Presbyterian Church, and our mission and vision as a church that seeks to be and make disciples. And most importantly, we talk about about how you can be a part of that. Lunch and childcare are provided (RSVP to help us plan for both).
2017 CLASSES: June 10 (Special class for Saturday worship service attendees), June 11 (PLEASE NOTE: this is a CHANGE from the June 4 date that was originally scheduled and announced), August 6, October 1, and December 3, 2017
We want to get to know you. After the One Class, you set up a time in the next two weeks to meet with a pastor or an elder to have a conversation about your faith journey. You’ll have the tools from the class to self-evaluate where you are at in your relationship with Jesus, and with the help of a pastor or elder we can figure out together with you what your next step in this community might be.
Based on the conversation, you’ll make a commitment to one next step. It could be a class, it could be finding a LifeGroup, whatever it is, we will ask you to commit to it. But we’ll also help you fulfill that commitment as best as we can.
A month after the class, we’ll all get together and celebrate! First, you’ll be introduced to the congregation on Sunday morning at both services and take your vows as a member. Then, that evening you’re invited to a dinner party. You will be a member of the church, and you’ll have taken your first step in walking deeper as a disciple of Jesus here at Chapel Hill. That’s worth celebrating with a meal and new friends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there anything else to the membership process?
What you see above is it! But that will just be the beginning of your journey here. We hope this class will start you off on the right foot and that you will continue to find opportunities for growth at Chapel Hill.
Do I need to sign up for the class? How would I do that?
Yes, please RSVP (so we know how much food to buy and how much childcare is needed). If you’d like to sign up for the next opening, please RSVP with Carole Hughes at
I've got kids who need naps and food, can you help me?
Childcare is available during our One Class. If you need childcare, mention that in your RSVP. Otherwise, elementary aged children are welcome to sit in the class as well.
