World Renowned organist to perform at Chapel Hill

Douglas Cleveland, internationally celebrated concert organist will be featured in a free organ recital and hymn sing at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor on Sunday afternoon, April 22 at 3:30 pm. This recital will showcase Chapel Hill's historic 1910 Hook & Hastings organ which was rescued, augmented, and restored by Marceau Organ company and installed in 1999 at Chapel Hill. This 58-rank pipe organ features 3558 pipes and a 4-manual console.

The recital will feature the two main purposes of this great instrument: to produce inspiring, uplifting, and worshipful music; and to lead and accompany congregational hymn singing. 

Organist Douglas Cleveland is the John Delo Faculty Fellow in organ at the University of Washington School of Music, Seattle, Washington. He is also Director of Music and Liturgical Arts at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Medina, Washington. He grew up in Olympia, Washington where his parents currently reside. Douglas studied under Ed Hanson at University of Puget Sound when in high school. Subsequently, he studied at the Eastman School of Music, Indiana University and Oxford University. Cleveland received a Lilly grant to study advanced choral conducting with David Hill at Winchester Cathedral. Mr. Cleveland gained international prominence when he won first prize in the 1994 American Guild of Organists National Young Artists Competition in Dallas. Since then, he has performed in 48 of the United States and has been invited to perform in such venues as Westminster Abbey, the Berlin Cathedral, Stockholm Cathedral, Moscow Conservatory, Norte-Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne, Minato Murai Concert Hall in Yokohama, Japan and the Cathedral of Lausanne, Switzerland.He has also performed with several symphony orchestras including the Chicago Symphony and the National Symphony, for an audience of 3,000 at the Washington National Cathedral. Late in 2017, Douglas presented concerts and taught classes in Beijing, China.

Come hear this world renowned artist play the outstanding instrument and participate in the singing of beautiful hymns to the glory of God. The recital/hymn sing will be free of charge and is a gift to the community from Chapel Hill. There will be a free will offering taken.
