When Golf Makes a Difference

When Golf Makes a Difference

The Pau Hana Golf Tournament is fast approaching. It’s an event that reaches far beyond an afternoon of fun on the Canterwood course or dinner in the Club. It’s an opportunity to show love, support, and investment in our youth. The funds raised on June 18 go back into growth and service opportunities for our Student Ministries youth, providing scholarships for students to participate in the Mexico missions trip, summer camp, and leadership training.

Here’s a look at how these scholarships shaped graduating senior Haley’s journey.

When I joined Hill youth group my sophomore year, I was welcomed into a community that was encouraging and uplifting. From the moment I set foot in the Diner, I felt that the leaders wanted me to be here. Now that I’m a senior and about to graduate, I can look back and realize what a difference the Hill family has made in my life. I’ve had the opportunity to serve on the student leadership team for HILL (the high school youth group) and volunteer as an Extreme leader for middle school. The Chapel Hill Youth Department has impacted my life, and I leave here knowing how to be a servant-leader that honors Christ.

Being in the youth department means that every summer we get the opportunity to go to summer camp, and every February we get the chance to go on the Mexico Mission trip. When I first heard about camp, I was excited to go, but I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to do it on my own financially. Scholarships from the passionate Chapel Hill family made all the difference.

In addition to summer camp, I also went to Mexico in February of 2017. To attend the Mexico mission trip was life changing, and I often think about the people of Tijuana. That week in particular rocked my world and allowed me to reach a deeper connection with the Lord.  I speak on behalf of other students when I say that these trips give us time to be in his presence, and through that stillness he gives us a new lens to see his creation through his eyes.

As mentioned above I’m a middle school leader, so as I write this I’m accompanied by the voices of middle schoolers praising God from the Arena in the youth wing. Their sweet voices lift up  “Your love so deep, its washing over me. Your face is all I seek, you are my everything…Lord hear my only cry to know you all my life.” I know that I will actively search for the Lord for the rest of my life because of the “God moments” I have been able to have in Mexico and summer camp.

I want to say a huge thank you to the members of Chapel Hill for your generosity. Trips like Capernwray and Mexico have opened the doors to community, leadership, and deeper relationship with Christ in my life. The scholarships have been a huge burden lifted off of my shoulders and allowed me to have once-in-a-lifetime experiences with my friends and leaders. Camps and mission trips have challenged me to grow closer in ways I didn’t know that I could before. I came to the Hill community as someone who was shy and unsure of herself. Now I leave here a courageous disciple who knows that she is a cherished daughter of the King.
