Refreshing our look

Refreshing our look

It’s hard to believe that we’ve already been in our “new” house for three years. Frankly, although we’d always dreamed about living in downtown Gig Harbor, we didn’t believe we could ever afford it. But when our realtor found us the proverbial “worst” house on the block with an incredible view, we knew we’d come home: a 1967 mid-century modern that was in desperate need of a refresh.

The first stop was the exterior paint. Cyndi described it as a “diaper” palette: a kind of yellow and a kind of brown. I’m sure that must have been very chic at one time, but it desperately needed updating. A fresh paint job did wonders. We loved the bones of the house; we loved the hip roof, the big windows, the sandstone chimney, the simple lines. But the initial impression…that needed some refreshing.

Our initial impression of our Chapel Hill church home needed the same thing. In 1995 when we opened the doors of our new sanctuary, we adopted the beautiful Celtic cross as our church logo, along with an “aubergine” (eggplant) color scheme. I loved it. Especially the cross. And I should have; I designed it. I could tell you every aspect of its design scheme—in fact, I may do just that in a future blog.

For 25 years, that logo has served us well. But just like our “new” home I described above, our church leaders came to realize that our initial impression needed some refreshing. And, after months of hard work (literally) and not a little ranting and raving at each other (I did a lot of that ranting) our Session-assigned team finally came up with a fresh logo and palette that got everyone excited. Even your grumpy, a-little-bit-stuck-in-the-past Senior Pastor. The good bones of our former image were still there—but in a fresh, up-to-date form.

If COVID-19 taught us anything, it taught us how important our virtual presence is. When the only Chapel Hill experience available to many is our on-line presence, we have to make sure that it is fresh and captivating. I believe we have done just that. Our Session believes the same thing. And we are excited to share that with you.

Tomorrow night, Sunday, July 26, at 7:00 pm on YouTube and Facebook, we will reveal our new logo in a 10-minute video. We will also explain the process, the thinking behind it and give you a “tour” of the logo to make sure you don’t miss some of the hidden gems.

I am an historian by training. I love and value our heritage. And I STILL love our Celtic cross (which isn’t going anywhere, by the way; you will continue to see it every Sunday when you enter our Sanctuary, walk into our reception area, or look at the roof of the Memorial Chapel) But I like our new look a lot, and I hope you will, too. So…join us for the big reveal tomorrow, July 26, at 7:00 pm on YouTube and Facebook; in fact, bookmark those two links now.

Now, speaking of history, I’m going to go pack for a one-night getaway with my sweet bride of 31 years—who DOESN’T need a bit of refreshing. She’s more beautiful than ever!

PS—Word has reached us regarding potentially violent protests in Seattle, similar to what has been happening in Portland. Please join me in praying for the police who have been severely limited in how they can respond on behalf of citizens who are at the mercy of anarchist forces.  “Lord, have mercy on us!  Please bring your protection and your justice!”
