Marijuana in Gig Harbor

Marijuana in Gig Harbor

We are all aware of the recent decision of our state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. It would not surprise you to hear that I think this is a foolish and destructive decision. And I suspect that the early, frightening reports coming out of Colorado of the damaging effects of easily-available marijuana are only the tip of the iceberg.

I can’t imagine an issue that could galvanize Gig Harbor faith communities like this one could. Marijuana usage among teenagers in Gig Harbor is already higher than the state average. Our lower-than-hoped-for graduation rates from both local high schools can be linked, in part, to substance abuse. And the research on the damaging impact of marijuana on the development of young minds could not be clearer.

Obviously, I think there are spiritual implications to this issue, as well.  But you don’t need to move beyond the medical and sociological implications to realize that increasing access to marijuana, apart from legitimate medical use, does not contribute to the well-being of any community.

I am very pleased to hear that the Peninsula School District passed a unanimous resolution opposing retail marijuana establishments in the City of Gig Harbor. I am also grateful that our City Council has, wisely, placed a six-month moratorium on any such establishments. On Monday night, June 9 at 5:30, the City Council will meet to consider this moratorium further. I hope that at that time, leaders from throughout our faith communities will present a resolution concurring with the Peninsula School Board in their recommendation to the City leaders. I also hope we will have a strong, respectful turnout of Chapel Hill members who consider this a matter of import. I will be out of town that night, but am doing what I can to rally the troops. I urge you to be among them.

If you are interested in reading further on this matter, you might want to review Pastor Mark Driscoll’s pamphlet, “Puff or Pass.”

Please pray that the Lord’s hand will be upon our leaders as they consider this important matter.

P.S. If you have a high school senior or college student who is interested in applying for a Chapel Hill scholarship, application forms are available online HERE. The Session has refined the criteria for these scholarships to prioritize member students of Chapel Hill who have demonstrated a strong personal faith in Christ and been actively involved in the life and ministry of our church. If your student qualifies, please fill out an application and submit it by June 15.
