Our History

On November 17, 1963, Chapel Hill United Presbyterian Church was founded under the leadership of Reverend Paul Neel, with 96 charter members. In February 1965, a ground-breaking ceremony was held on a ten-acre parcel on Rosedale Street. Dedication of the new 250-seat church building took place in November of that same year.

In 1972, Reverend Thomas Tweedie began a three-year term as pastor of Chapel Hill. Reverend Dr. Frank Burgess was installed as pastor in 1976 and he served until his retirement in 1985. During his term of service construction of east wing classrooms was completed. Reverend David Newquist began an extended term as interim pastor in 1985. In September of 1987, Reverend Dr. Mark James Toone began service as Chapel Hill’s fifth (and current) pastor.

As the Chapel Hill congregation grew, the building followed suit. Phase I added a Family Activity Center (dedicated in 1992), and the current 1500-seat Sanctuary opened in 1997. Continued growth initiated the next phase of expansion, which included a Youth Center (diner, amphitheater, offices), the Gathering Place (a large multi-purpose meeting room), HeBrews Coffee Shop, commercial kitchen, and administrative offices.
